St. John's Wort: A Natural Sedative

We know that there are different moments in life, and that some can be darker than others. When anxiety and/or worries fill our minds, we struggle to concentrate, we’re not fully present, and our sleep is drastically reduced, along with our energy levels.

Every person is different, and we cannot know how intensely each of us experiences our emotions, whether positive or negative.

But we know that there are natural substances that act on the central nervous system by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin (the “feel-good” hormone). One of these substances is Hypericum, also known as St. John’s Wort.

Fun Facts

St. John’s Wort is a plant with bright yellow flowers, found throughout most of the world.

Its name derives from the Greek words *hyper* (above) and *eikon* (image), because in ancient times this plant was often seen growing around statues. It was likely this very characteristic that fueled the belief that St. John’s wort was a magical plant, capable of warding off evil spirits and demons.

It is also commonly known as “St. John’s Wort” because it blooms most profusely around the end of June, on the feast day of St. John.

Properties and Uses

St. John’s Wort extract is known for its powerful antidepressant and anxiolytic effects, which have also been confirmed by several clinical studies on the treatment of mild and moderate depression.
Its effectiveness is linked to certain molecules (such as flavonoids) that act on the nervous system, promoting relaxation and a positive mood.

For anxiety, insomnia, and severe stress, we usually recommend two of our St. John’s Wort-based supplements:

Serene Iperico Extra, which is ideal for treating sleep disorders and anxiety, as well as cardiac arrhythmia and nervous-related intestinal spasms. Its effectiveness is enhanced by the inclusion of medicinal plants in dry extract and powder form, such as valerian, hawthorn, and California poppy.

Serene 5-HTP is ideal for relieving and counteracting the most common symptoms of depression, such as difficulty concentrating and mood swings.
We’ve combined St. John’s Wort extract with Griffonia extract for its significant content of 5-hydroxytryptophan, a molecule that is rapidly absorbed by the body and exerts a calming and stress-relieving effect.
In addition, the supplement is enriched with Rhodiola rosea (which promotes a positive mood), vitamins, and magnesium, which help address the deficiencies typically associated with depression.
