A few months ago, we began producing a new natural supplement in our laboratories, and it has been appearing on the shelves of Naturetica stores in recent weeks. It is a supplement based on glutathione (or GSH), one of the most important antioxidants synthesized by our bodies.
Today, we'll explain in more detail how it works and what its benefits are.
Properties of Glutathione
As we mentioned earlier, glutathione is produced naturally by our bodies, specifically by the liver. Its extremely important role is to protect cells from the free radicals produced during the process of eliminating toxins.
Just think: every time we have a little too much to drink or take medications that are hard to metabolize, glutathione is the one that does the dirty work. You could say it’s a sort of street sweeper that keeps the streets clear of toxic waste.
Glutathione is composed of three peptides (glycine, cysteine, and glutamic acid), and it is precisely this unique chemical bond that enables it to “act as a trap” for free radicals. GSH has a very high oxidation capacity: once it has donated its hydrogen and accepted a negative electron from free radicals, it is then able to be reduced (and thus regain its antioxidant capacity) thanks to the action of a specific enzyme.
This ability to continuously regenerate allows glutathione to protect the liver by, so to speak, “sacrificing itself” in place of proteins or other oxidizable compounds.
Benefits and Uses
Taking glutathione is extremely beneficial in all cases where the liver is overloaded.
It helps not only to protect and detoxify the body but also to regulate and stimulate the immune system’s response.
It is used in cases of liver and biliary insufficiency and drug toxicity, but also to protect organs from the side effects of chemotherapy or to improve insulin sensitivity in diabetic patients. In everyday life, a GSH-based supplement can simply be used to support normal liver function. For example, in cases of:
• long-term use of medications
• periods of repeated dietary lapses
• male fertility issues (glutathione deficiency in men can cause impaired sperm motility)
When the seasons change, we often recommend a detoxifying regimen based on Glutathione Detox, enriched with dandelion extract—which aids digestion and promotes diuresis—and lipoic acid, which reduces oxidative stress and improves blood sugar control.
