Maca Root: The Gift of the Incas

Today we want to start with the textbook version of history—the one we’ve always studied in our schoolbooks.

You may recall that before Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492, the Americas were inhabited by numerous indigenous civilizations, which coexisted peacefully on the continent. Among them all, the Inca Empire stood out in Peru, with its capital in Cuzco (the city that lends its name to the main character of the delightful animated film *The Emperor’s New Groove*).

The herbal remedy we’re discussing today has its roots in this ancient warrior civilization. “Has its roots” is the right way to describe it, because we’re actually talking about a tuber. Let’s explore the benefits of Maca, also known as Peruvian ginseng.

The Gift of the Gods

Maca is grown in the Peruvian Andes, at an altitude between 3,700 and 4,000 meters.
Like Rhodiola rosea, it belongs to the family of adaptogens; it is a plant that can withstand extreme conditions, but to do so, it needs to draw every possible nutrient from the soil. That is why, once Maca has been grown in a particular area for several years, it is no longer possible to grow anything else there.

The Incas were well acquainted with this powerful natural remedy and had nicknamed it “Gift of the Gods,” precisely because of the incredible burst of energy it gave warriors before battles. If you recall, this story is very similar to that of the Golden Root (seethis article), which the Vikings consumed to gain strength and physical endurance.

In fact, it can improve athletes' performance.

The Benefits of Maca

Maca is rich in essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Its adaptogenic properties make it an excellent remedy for combating both physical and mental fatigue. We could say that it has an effect similar to that of drinking a nice cup of coffee, without the unwanted side effects of caffeine. We recommend this Maca-based supplement during periods of high stress, but also for those who, due to work or school, are subjected to constant mental and cognitive strain.

In addition, Maca extract contains fatty acids, sterols, and aromatic isothiocyanates: biologically active compounds that act as aphrodisiacs. Several studies have demonstrated its sexually stimulating effects and its ability to improve erections in cases of erectile dysfunction. In women, it helpsmaintain proper hormonal balance, as this plant stimulates the ovaries, adrenal glands, thyroid, and pancreas to produce hormones at normal levels. It also supports theendocrine system by alleviating the negative effects of menopause.
