D-Mannose Plus is an effective aid in preventing and combating urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as cystitis, because it contains two main anti-adhesion agents—D-mannose and cranberry—combined with vitamin C.
D-mannose is a simple sugar that interferes with the adhesion of type 1 fimbriated E. coli bacteria, competitively inhibiting their attachment to uroepithelial cells; this molecule binds to the bacteria, displaces them from their binding sites, and carries them into the urinary stream, where they are subsequently destroyed by the body’s natural defense mechanisms.
The mechanism of action of D-mannose works in conjunction with that of the proanthocyanidins (PACs) in cranberries, which, in turn, block the adhesion of P-fimbriae-bearing E. coli by binding to the galactosidic residues on the surface of uroepithelial cells.
