Fucus is a brown alga characterized by a ribbon-like thallus that can reach one meter in length. It is rich in iodine (organic and inorganic), mineral salts, trace elements, vitamins, and alginates, substances that give it purifying and metabolism-toning properties. Alginate also has a mild laxative effect. Due to its endocrine action, Fucus is used in phytotherapy to stimulate the thyroid gland in cases of hypothyroidism, promoting the balanced production of thyroid hormones (contraindicated, however, in hyperthyroid patients). It is also used as a support in weight-loss therapies, especially
in the early stages, as it stimulates metabolism and accelerates catabolism, especially protein, with effects visible after about three weeks and localized in areas rich in fatty tissue such as the hips and thighs. It may also prove useful in psoriasis, a condition related to lipid imbalances.
