Rhodiola Rosea benefits

Rhodiola rosea benefits, the little rose that helps body and mind

"Little Rose," "Golden Root."

These are the appellations used to refer to Rhodiola Rosea; similar in appearance to the flower whose name it bears, but as strong and tough as the trunk of a pine tree. Today we discuss this portentous plant, known since ancient times for its many beneficial effects on the body and mind.

Ready for anything.

Rhodiola Rosea grows mainly at high altitudes, in the Alps and mountainous areas throughout Eurasia. It was probably the forced survival to harsh climatic conditions that caused this plant to develop adaptogenic properties.

"But what is an adaptogenic property?" you may ask.

Plants such as Ginseng and Rhodiola contain within them substances that can increase resistance to severe physical and mental stress. Rhodiola, in particular, is recognized to be one of the plants with the greatest adaptogenic effect, as it stimulates the production of adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin, with lasting effects on mood and physique.

But let's take a closer look at its uses in herbal medicine.

As an antidepressant.

Serotonin, also called the "happy hormone," is a neurotransmitter synthesized by the brain and responsible for several functions within our bodies, including sleep, appetite, and sexuality. Deficiency of this substance can lead to anxiety disorders, panic attacks and depression. Rhodiola is recommended in these cases because it acts on the sympathetic system, increasing serotonin levels in the blood by up to 30 percent and improving mood.

As a tonic.

Of the various active compounds found in Rhodiola extract, salidroside is certainly the most important. It is a phenolic glycoside capable of increasing dopamine levels in the blood, resulting in activation of the muscles and heart. Not surprisingly, Rhodiola is also recommended as a tonic, as it increases physical endurance and reduces recovery time. In addition, salidroside has beneficial effects on brain function, increasing mnemonic ability and concentration levels .

To activate metabolism.

We have seen how the intake of Rhodiola Rosea regulates serotonin levels in the blood. This hormone not only has effects on mood, but also on metabolic functions: it intervenes in the control of satiety, reduces carbohydrate intake, and promotes lipolysis of fatty acids. Taking Rhodiola Rosea before meals has been shown to promote body weight control and reduction; therefore, it proves to be an excellent supplement for low-calorie diets .
